So my original production plan didn’t hold up and I’ve had to take a more chaotic approach—to be honest I was expecting something like this, which is why I tried to give myself some structure even of a flexible sort, but in the end I’ve just had to roll with whatever my heart wanted to fixate on making next.

Which is to say that I’ve spent a good portion of this week making background art, something that I hadn’t scheduled until later. But it’s not the handpainted backgrounds that were in my best-case-scenario, but rather the time-honoured tradition of blasting public domain photos with way too many filters.

And honestly? I had a ton of fun doing this. I wasn’t really sure what the filter-blasting would entail but once I hit upon a stride I actually had a great time coming up with ways to apply it.

Of course, there’s still a lot to do and time is starting to tighten upon us. I’m moving more things into the “maybe in a post-jam update” pile but the stuff I am getting done is definitely of the most-essential sort. Whatever I end up with at the end of this jam is going to be in some way actually playable and the art enough to get the point across, and isn’t that the bare minimum we can hope for?

Still, I want to keep reaching higher even if it is for a jam. This is an opportunity to challenge myself and by god I am taking it, even if a lot of it ends up being playing with silly photo filters.

This week: Lock down on the art I can’t outsource to public domain photos. That’s where the real test of strength is!
